She does and becomes vitally part of the house. The story is about Toddy's effect on the household and her coming into herself. Oct 18, Briti Bhattacharyya rated it it was amazing Shelves: historical-fiction , favorites-of-all-time. This is my first review on Goodreads and I couldn't have chosen a better book to review. I first read an abridged version of this book for young adults titled "Toddy" when I was a little girl. Its heart-touching sweetness and simplicity almost immediately made it one of my favorites, and along with its companion novels "Laurel" and "Kit," is often thought of in fond remembrance by my sister and I, and is inextricably linked with our childhood.

I'd been searching for an unabridged version for years This is my first review on Goodreads and I couldn't have chosen a better book to review. I'd been searching for an unabridged version for years, when I happened to stumble on it earlier today. Homeward the Seeking Heart is a story about hope, love and faith, and how at the end of all of it, we're all just looking for a place to belong. While it heavily concentrates on Christian morality, I thoroughly enjoyed its universal message of acceptance which is, in my opinion, definitely not the least bit imposing on its readers.

Toddy's story has always been my personal favorite of the series, especially because of its vivacious protagonist. Equal parts mischievous, and honorable, Toddy possesses the quiet charm of olden-day heroines, while managing to grip the reader with her tenacious spirit. Amidst the life she has been able to find, being adopted by a family after traveling the Orphan Train West, she clutches onto her desire to truly belong somewhere and never gives up on her happily ever after. Perhaps my favorite character in this book would be Helene, Toddy's adopted sister, who has all the sweetness of Beth from Little Women and loves Toddy more than anything else in the world.

Add in a sweet romance with a childhood sweetheart, a friendship with two of her "forever friends," and a moral that is at the same time sweet and enriching, and the book truly is a catch. A word of caution however, for those who dislike Christian fiction, or moralistic books.

The Orphan Train is a captivating story of two very different women who build an unexpected friendship: a year-old woman with a hidden past as an orphan-train rider and the teenage girl whose own troubled adolescence leads her to seek answers to questions no one has ever thought to ask. Nearly eighteen, Molly Ayer knows she has one last chance.

Vivian Daly has lived a quiet life on the coast of Maine. But in her attic, hidden in trunks, are vestiges of a turbulent past.

As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly discovers that she and Vivian aren't as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance. The closer Molly grows to Vivian, the more she discovers parallels to her own life. A Penobscot Indian, she, too, is an outsider being raised by strangers, and she, too, has unanswered questions about the past. As her emotional barriers begin to crumble, Molly discovers that she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her for her entire life—answers that will ultimately free them both.
